Level Up

We have all heard the term “level up” in one form or another. The first time I heard it was several years ago at a wedding. A lady sitting behind me said the groom was “marrying up.” I had to ask my daughter after the wedding the meaning of the phrase. After the explanation, the lightbulb in my brain finally came on. Since that time, I have heard the phrase or forms of it repeatedly.
The original term came from the gaming community. In gaming, to “level up” means to earn enough points to let the player move to the next level. Each level up the player gains more knowledge and skill. Just recently the term has been trending to describe anyone who is trying to improve their skills at their profession. Baseball, football, and basketball players are all leveling up their games. Corporate junior executives are trying to level up to the next rung of the ladder. High school and college students are trying to level up their studies. What is another word for level up? Words like advance, develop, enhance, grow, and improve are the examples that come to mind.
What about me and you? Are we trying to level up are home-based business? Are we challenging ourselves to learn new skills? When was the last time you took a masterclass, an online seminar, or hired a mentor to help you level up?
Technology has never been my strong suit. When I worked as an administrator, I always had an administrative assistant who managed everything for me. Emails, word files, power point presentations, creating forms, etc., they were all delegated to her. Afterall, my job was to gain knowledge, transform knowledge into policy, supervise employees and problem solve, and God had blessed me with those skills. Every night in my prayers, I would thank God for sending me such a wonderful assistant. She was outstanding!
There have been so many major advances in technology since that time. Unfortunately for me, I no longer have an administrative assistant. When I decided to start this blog, I quickly realized that my technological skills were worse than I realized. In the past four months, I have taken classes, attended webinars, and had tutoring sessions on creating a website that I think my brain might explode. I quickly came to realized that technology is still not my strong suit.

Thankfully for me, I was able to hire the extremely talented Erin Ulrich. She and her team took the random bits and pieces of information that I provided and using their technological knowledge and skills, turned those bits and pieces into a beautiful website. Not only skilled in all things technical, but Erin is also an incredibly talented designer and writer. You can discover more about Erin, her design work, and her books at www.designbyinsight.net .
The person with the level up attitude makes a choice to do the best they can with the skills they have. If they do not have the skills they need, they will learn them or seek help from someone who does. To level up my business, I chose to focus on the talents that God had blessed me with; doing so allowed me to recognize that I needed help in the areas that I was weakest in. What skills or talents has God blessed you with? Are you using them to the fullest? Are you striving to be more – do more? Do you know when to ask for help?
I am always seeking ways grow in my personal life and my home-based business. I encourage you to look at yourself and your business for ways to advance, grow, and develop – in other words level up to create your good life.
Send me an e-mail with any questions and let me know how you level up your home-based business. I look forward to hearing from you.
